Migrants’ Arirang Music Festival 2021 Opening Ceremony

Migrants’ Arirang Music Festival or MAMF is the largest multicultural festival in Korea that is held annually in Changwon City. Celebrating its 16th year, this year’s festival under the theme “Cultural Diversity” was held for three days starting from October 22 to October 24.

On the first day of the festival, the opening ceremony was held in Sungsan Art Hall Grand theater at 7pm. Due to strict Covid-19 restrictions, only those who had been fully vaccinated or who had negative PCR test results were allowed to enter, and reservations for tickets had to be made prior to the event.

The opening ceremony was kicked off by a congratulatory performance by the multicultural children’s choir “Modoo”, followed by the opening declaration by the MAMF Committee.

Congratulatory speeches were given by special guests, including Mr. Ha Byeong Pil (acting governor of Gyeongnam Province), Mr. Ram Singh Thapa (Nepalese Ambassador), and Congressman Choi Hyeong Doo.

After the speeches, the audience was treated to a spectacular performance by famous traditional musicians from Korea and China.

This special cultural performance featured stellar musicians from Korea namely Kim Deok-su, Sinawi Ensemble, and the Yuaminrak Band. Wang-wei, Ibi, and Tang-tien-tien were the other foreign performers.

Every year, the festival chooses a country to highlight, and this year’s featured country was Nepal. Due to pandemic restrictions, the cultural performances had been pre-recorded. Nepalese cultural performers showcased their country’s rich cultural heritage and traditions through wonderful traditional songs and dances.

Other events included Korea Migrants’ Song Festival, Nahee 2021 Horror Parade, MAMF Talk Show, and Asia Pop Music Concert.

All the MAMF 2021 events and programs were streamed live on their online platform www.mamf.co.kr and could also be viewed on their YouTube channel.

Despite the limitations due to the ongoing pandemic, the festival was held safely and successfully. A great deal of effort was put into harmonizing the diverse cultures of Asia, and this serves as a reminder that despite our cultural differences, we can all live in harmony and peace.
